# Early check-in and late checkout: what AI agents need (US)

> Red-eye arrivals and late flights mean guests ask agents for early check-in or late checkout. If it's 'subject to availability' only, agents can't promise it.

A guest landing on a red-eye at 7am, or flying home at 9pm, asks their assistant: "Book a hotel and make sure I can check in early" or "get me a late checkout". The answer depends on how the hotel handles early check-in and late checkout, and whether the agent can see it.

## Three common approaches

**Free, subject to availability.** The guest asks on arrival. Common at many independents.

**Paid, subject to availability.** A fee charged if the room is ready.

**Guaranteed, paid in advance.** Sold as an add-on or a rate, sometimes as half a night's charge. The clearest for agents.

## What agents need to know

- Standard check-in and check-out times, written as text.
- Whether early check-in or late checkout is possible, and how.
- The cost, if any.
- Whether it can be guaranteed or only requested.
- Where bags can be left before check-in or after checkout.

## Where it goes wrong

- Times shown only in confirmation emails.
- "Early check-in available" without saying it's not guaranteed.
- Fees charged at the desk, not shown online.
- Requests in a comments box that the desk doesn't see.

A guest who believes their agent secured a 7am check-in, only to find the room isn't ready until 3pm, will blame the hotel, or the agent.

## The night-before option

For red-eye arrivals, booking the previous night guarantees a room. An agent may suggest it, if it knows check-in times and the guest's arrival time. Some hotels offer a discounted "early arrival" rate for this. If you do, make it bookable.

## Make it an add-on if you can

Hotels that sell guaranteed early check-in or late checkout as a bookable extra give agents a clean way to say yes. It can also bring extra revenue. Hotels that can't guarantee it should say so clearly.

## Structured facts

Check-in and check-out times can also be expressed in [structured data](https://akkrev.com/glossary/structured-data/). Some systems may read it; plain text on the page matters too.

## What this means for AI recommendations

Guests ask AI for "hotels with late checkout" for early flights or late events. Hotels that state their check-in and checkout options plainly get named for those questions.

## How to check

Ask an agent: "Book a room at [your hotel] arriving [a date] at 8am, on the hotel's own website. Can I check in early? Is it guaranteed, and what does it cost? Stop before paying." Then ask the same for a late checkout. If the answers are vague or wrong, guests' agents get the same. Our [free agent check](https://akkrev.com/ai-agent-booking/#free-agent-check) can include this.

## Questions

### Can an agent guarantee early check-in?

Only if the hotel sells it as a guaranteed add-on or rate. 'Subject to availability' means the agent can request it but not promise it.

### Should early check-in fees be shown?

Yes. If there's a charge, show it before booking so agents can include it.

### What's the alternative to guaranteed early check-in?

Booking the night before. Agents may suggest it for red-eye arrivals, if they know check-in times.

### Do agents read check-in and check-out times?

Yes, they're among the most common facts agents look for. They should be clear in text.

### Can an agent ask for early check-in after booking?

It can send a message if the hotel offers online messaging or email. The reply usually goes to the guest, not the agent.
