# Can AI agents book a family room in a UK hotel?

> Family bookings need room occupancy, children's ages and bed types. Many UK hotel sites hide these or make family rooms phone-only, so agents book elsewhere.

Parents planning a break are among the keenest users of AI assistants: there's a lot to check and little time. "Find a hotel in York for two adults and two children aged 5 and 9, one room, with breakfast" is a typical request. It's also one of the hardest for agents to book direct with independent hotels.

## What agents need

- The maximum occupancy of each room type, and how it splits (adults, children, infants).
- What age counts as a child and the price for each child.
- Bed setup: double plus sofa bed, bunks, extra bed, cot.
- Whether the rate includes children's breakfast.

## Where it goes wrong

**Booking engines that only accept adults.** Some engines have no child field, or cap rooms at two guests online, and send families to "call us".

**Occupancy in the description, not the system.** "Sleeps 4 with sofa bed" in text, but the booking engine refuses three or four guests.

**Children's prices added at the desk.** The agent's total is wrong.

**Interconnecting rooms by request only.** Families who need two rooms that connect can't get a guarantee online.

## What the agent does

It looks for a hotel that accepts the whole family in one online booking with a clear total. Big chains and OTAs usually handle this well. Independent hotels often lose the booking at the occupancy step, even when they have the perfect room.

## What parents actually ask

- "Hotel in Bath for two adults and a 3-year-old, travel cot needed, Saturday and Sunday."
- "Two connecting rooms in Edinburgh for a family of five."
- "Family room with a bath, not just a shower, for a toddler."
- "Somewhere with a pool and a children's menu."

Each detail is something the agent tries to confirm: cot availability, interconnecting rooms, bath versus shower, facilities and food. If the answers are only in photos or "please ask", the agent picks a hotel that states them.

## How occupancy rules trip agents

Booking engines decide which room types appear for a given party. If the engine is set to two guests per room, a family of four sees nothing, or only two-room options, and the agent may never see the family room at all. Children's ages matter too: an infant in a cot, a 6-year-old on a sofa bed and a 14-year-old counted as an adult are all handled differently, and the engine needs to ask for ages to get it right.

## Prices for children

Many UK hotels charge for children's breakfast or extra beds at the desk. That's fine for people who read the small print, but the agent's total won't include it. A parent told "£280 for two nights" who pays £340 at checkout is unlikely to book direct again.

## Why it matters

Family bookings are often longer and higher value, and families return to places that worked. Losing them to an OTA, or to a chain with a simple "family room" option, is expensive.

## What this means for AI recommendations

Families ask AI for rooms that sleep four or five. AI recommends hotels whose family rooms and occupancy limits are written down clearly. Room names alone don't tell AI who fits.

## How to check

Ask an agent to book a room for two adults and two children (give ages) at your hotel, on your own site, and stop before paying. Note whether it could enter the children, which room it chose and the total. Our [free agent check](https://akkrev.com/ai-agent-booking/#free-agent-check) can include this request. ## Questions

### Can AI agents book hotel rooms for children?

If the booking engine lets them enter children and their ages, and shows rooms that fit, yes. Engines that only accept adults or cap rooms at two guests often stop family bookings.

### Do AI agents know if a hotel provides cots?

Only if the hotel's site says so in text, ideally in the booking flow. If cots are 'on request', agents can't confirm one will be there.
