# Incidental holds, deposits and AI agents at US hotels

> US hotels take incidental holds and often require a credit card. If those rules aren't shown before booking, AI agents can't warn guests.

Most US hotels place an authorization hold on the guest's card at check-in for incidentals, often a set amount per night or per stay. Many require a credit card rather than a debit card, and some take a deposit at booking. These details matter to guests, and to the AI agents booking for them.

## Why agents need these rules up front

An agent paying for a room may use a one-time virtual card, as Meta's Muse does through Link by Stripe. That raises questions a guest would want answered before booking:

- Will the hotel accept a virtual card for the booking?
- Does the same card need to be presented at check-in?
- How much is the incidental hold, and is it on a credit card only?
- Is there a deposit now and a balance later?

If these rules live in a policies page the agent didn't open, the guest finds out at the front desk.

## Common problems

- "A credit card in the guest's name is required at check-in" stated only in the confirmation email.
- Holds that differ by rate or season, shown only at the desk.
- Debit card restrictions that aren't mentioned online.
- Prepaid rates where the card used to book must match the card presented, which an agent booking with a one-time card can't satisfy.

## Why it matters

Agent bookings will increasingly be paid with tokenized or one-time cards. Hotels whose payment and hold policies are clear, and compatible, will avoid failed check-ins and disputes. Hotels whose policies are unclear may see agents choose more predictable options.

## One-time cards and check-in

Agents increasingly pay with one-time or virtual card numbers, so the merchant never sees the guest's real card. That's good for security. It can clash with common hotel practices:

- **"The card used to book must be presented at check-in."** A one-time card can't be presented.
- **Prepaid rates charged at booking**, then an incidental hold on a different card at the desk. Fine, if the guest knows to bring a card.
- **Debit card restrictions** on holds, which matter if the guest's only physical card is a debit card.

None of this stops agent bookings outright. It does mean the hotel's policies need to say what the guest should bring and what will be held, before the booking is made.

## What a clear payment policy looks like

A short paragraph on the booking page covers it: when the room is charged, whether a deposit is taken, the incidental hold amount, which cards are accepted for the hold, and that the guest should bring a physical credit card. Agents can read that and pass it on. Guests arrive prepared.

## Why it matters

Check-in problems create bad first impressions, refund requests and reviews that mention "hidden charges", even when the hold is released. Agents also learn from bad outcomes. Clear rules protect the hotel's reputation with guests and with the agents booking for them.

## What this means for AI recommendations

Unclear deposit and hold policies make AI hedge or skip you. Stated policies help AI describe your hotel accurately when guests compare options.

## How to check

Ask an agent to book a room at your hotel on your own site and stop before paying. Ask it: "What deposit, card requirements and incidental hold will apply?" If it can't answer from your site, guests' agents can't either. Our [free agent check](https://akkrev.com/ai-agent-booking/#free-agent-check) includes this.

## Questions

### Can AI agents pay for hotels with virtual cards?

Yes. Meta's Muse, for example, pays through Link by Stripe, which issues one-time card numbers. Hotels whose policies require the booking card at check-in should say so before payment.

### Do AI agents tell guests about incidental holds?

Only if the hotel's booking page states the hold amount and card requirements before payment. Holds explained only at the desk surprise guests.
