# Are US hotel websites blocking AI crawlers?

> Many hotel sites block AI bots in robots.txt, often by default. What each bot does, what blocking may cost, and how a US hotel can check its own file.

Many US hotel websites now include rules for AI bots in their robots.txt file. Some block a long list of them. Often the hotel didn't choose this directly: a web agency, a plugin or a hosting provider added it.

We haven't yet surveyed US hotels at scale. In our [UK pilot of 28 hotels](https://akkrev.com/blog/what-we-learned-testing-28-uk-hotel-booking-engines/), one hotel blocked about 20 AI crawlers, including ChatGPT-User, yet its booking engine worked for our agent. See [UK hotels blocking ChatGPT-User](https://akkrev.com/blog/uk-hotels-blocking-chatgpt-user-robots-txt/).

## Different bots, different jobs

AI companies run several kinds of bot:

- **Training crawlers,** such as GPTBot and CCBot, collect pages that may be used to train models.
- **Search crawlers,** such as OAI-SearchBot, help assistants find and cite pages in answers.
- **User-triggered fetchers,** such as ChatGPT-User, visit a page because a person asked about it.

OpenAI describes its bots on its [crawler overview page](https://platform.openai.com/docs/bots). Other companies publish similar lists. See [AI crawler](https://akkrev.com/glossary/ai-crawler/), [GPTBot](https://akkrev.com/glossary/gptbot/) and [OAI-SearchBot](https://akkrev.com/glossary/oai-searchbot/).

## What blocking may cost

**Training bots.** Blocking them is a content choice. It may have little direct effect on bookings.

**Search bots.** Blocking them can mean assistants can't read or cite your pages. They may rely on OTAs and reviews instead.

**User-triggered fetchers.** Blocking them can stop an assistant from reading your page when a guest asks about you specifically.

## What blocking doesn't do

robots.txt is a request, not a lock. Browser-based agents acting for a user may not check it. And booking engines usually sit on the provider's domain, with their own rules. That's why the UK hotel still passed.

## Network-level blocking

Some CDNs and security services offer AI bot blocking at the network level. That can block bots regardless of robots.txt, and sometimes catch agents too. See [bot management](https://akkrev.com/glossary/bot-management/).

## Choosing on purpose

A hotel can treat training, search and user-triggered bots differently. The point is to know what you're blocking and why. See [are UK hotel websites blocking AI agents?](https://akkrev.com/blog/are-uk-hotel-websites-blocking-ai-agents/) for more on the same issue.

## What this means for AI recommendations

If your robots.txt or firewall blocks AI crawlers, assistants learn about you from OTAs and review sites instead. That changes what they say and where they send the guest.

## How to check

Open yourhotel.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for lines naming GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, followed by "Disallow: /". Then ask your web agency and hosting provider whether any AI bot blocking is switched on at the network level. Our [free agent check](https://akkrev.com/ai-agent-booking/#free-agent-check) can look at this too.

## Questions

### Why would a hotel block AI crawlers?

To keep content out of model training, to reduce server load, or because a security tool or agency did it by default.

### Does blocking stop AI agents booking?

Not necessarily. In our UK pilot, a hotel blocking about 20 AI crawlers still passed, because the booking engine sat on another domain and browser-based agents don't always read robots.txt.

### Can blocking hurt visibility?

Yes. Blocking search and user-triggered bots can stop assistants from reading your pages when answering questions about you.

### Do CDN or firewall settings matter too?

Yes. Some services offer one-click AI bot blocking at the network level, which works separately from robots.txt.

### Should a hotel block training bots?

That's a content decision for each business. The cost to visibility is usually lower than blocking search or user-triggered bots, but it's worth deciding knowingly.

### Who usually adds AI bot blocks?

Web agencies, security plugins and hosting or CDN settings, often without the hotel knowing.
