# Why do AI agents book US hotels through Expedia?

> Expedia is inside ChatGPT, works with Meta's Muse and is easy for browser agents. Why agents default to it, and how hotels lose direct bookings.

Because Expedia is where AI agents can most reliably finish a hotel booking. It's built into the AI tools, it's built for automated shopping, and its checkout works the same for every hotel. Independent hotels compete with that on their own websites.

## Expedia is inside the AI tools

- **ChatGPT** has an Expedia app that shows live hotel prices and availability, with bookings completed on Expedia.
- **Meta's Muse** books hotels by browsing consumer sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com, and Expedia has announced hotel bookings through Muse.

When an assistant reaches for live hotel prices, Expedia's are often already there.

## Expedia is easy for agents

Every hotel on Expedia has the same search, room list, price breakdown and checkout. An agent that has booked one can book any of them. Independent hotel sites each have their own engine, widget, pop-ups and rules.

## The result

An agent asked to book an independent hotel tries the hotel's site, meets a CAPTCHA or a widget it can't operate, then books the same hotel on Expedia. The guest is happy. The hotel pays commission, typically 15 to 25%, and gets an OTA guest instead of a direct one.

## Price isn't the deciding factor

Many independent hotels offer the same or better prices direct. Agents will book direct when they can reach that price with confidence. A better rate behind a login, a pop-up or a broken date picker doesn't count.

## The same hotel, two routes

Picture an independent 40-room hotel in Savannah (an illustration). A guest asks their agent for "a boutique hotel in the historic district, two nights, under $500 total, refundable".

- **On the hotel's own site**, the agent meets a newsletter pop-up, a date picker inside an iframe and a total that adds a $25 nightly amenity fee at checkout. It takes several minutes and the total ends up at $521.
- **On Expedia**, the agent searches, filters by refundable, sees $498 including fees with taxes shown separately and reaches checkout in under a minute.

It books Expedia. The hotel's direct rate was actually lower before the fee, and its amenity fee covered parking the guest needed anyway. The agent never got far enough to weigh that.

## Why "it's the same price" isn't enough

Hotels often say "our direct price is the same as Expedia's, so guests have no reason to book there". For agents, ease of completion is a reason. When prices are equal, the route with fewer obstacles wins. When the direct route has more obstacles, the direct price has to be noticeably better, and visible, to win.

## The longer-term effect

Agents remember what worked. If Expedia reliably completes bookings for your hotel and your own site doesn't, Expedia becomes the agent's default route to you, for that guest and for others.

## What this means for AI recommendations

Expedia's listings are detailed and consistent, so AI trusts them. Hotels whose own sites are equally clear give AI a reason to link them instead.

## How to check

Ask an agent: "Book [your hotel] for two nights on the hotel's own website, not Expedia or another booking site. Stop before paying." If it ends up on Expedia anyway, or gives up, that's your leak. ## Questions

### Is it bad for hotels if AI agents book through Expedia?

It's still a booking, but the hotel pays commission, typically 15 to 25%, and gets less guest data. Over time, agents may treat the OTA as the default route to the hotel.

### Will AI agents book direct if my price is lower?

If they can see the lower price and complete the booking without obstacles, often yes. A better price hidden behind logins, pop-ups or late fees usually doesn't win.
