# Why your booking engine choice matters less than you think

> In our pilot, hotels on the same booking engine scored differently. How a hotel's own website links to its engine mattered as much as the engine itself.

When hoteliers hear that AI agents struggle with some booking engines, the natural question is: should we switch? Our pilot suggests that's rarely the first question to ask.

## Same engine, different scores

In our pilot of 28 independent UK hotels, several engines appeared more than once. Results on the same engine were often close, but not identical:

- One engine had seven hotels in the sample. All seven passed, but scores ranged from 8 to 12 out of 12. The difference came from the hotels' own websites: how visible the booking link was, how slow the homepage was, and whether the engine was opened in a slow-loading widget.
- Another engine had five hotels, all passing. Two of them hid the booking link from our agent, which had to be given the engine address. Once there, the engine worked well.
- Even engines that struggled with dates did better on some hotels than others, depending on how the hotel's site passed the guest across.

## What the hotel controls

The engine controls the booking pages. The hotel, and its web agency, usually control:

- **The link.** Is there a real link to the engine, or a script-built button?
- **The handover.** Does the link pass dates and guests to the engine, or drop the guest on a blank search?
- **The widget.** Is the engine opened as its own page or squeezed into a pop-up or [iframe](https://akkrev.com/glossary/iframe/)?
- **The homepage.** Is it fast, or loaded with video and scripts the agent has to wait for?
- **The rules.** Does the site's robots.txt or firewall treat agents as unwelcome?

These are often cheaper to change than an engine, and they're under the hotel's control.

## What the engine controls

Some things are down to the engine:

- Whether it accepts dates in the web address.
- Whether prices and room names are readable as text.
- Whether the date picker is accessible.
- What bot protection runs on its pages.
- Whether it offers newer agent connections, such as an [MCP server](https://akkrev.com/glossary/mcp-server/).

These are worth asking your provider about. Many are improving their products quickly.

## A better question than "which engine?"

Instead of asking which engine is best for agents, ask: can an agent get from my homepage to a price for a specific date, quickly, on my own site? If the answer is yes, your engine is probably fine for now. If not, find out where it breaks before deciding what to change.

## What this means for AI recommendations

For AI visibility too, what matters is what AI can read about you across the web, not which software you use. Clear facts and good coverage beat a new booking engine.

## How to check

Ask an agent: "Go to [your website], find the hotel's own booking page and tell me the price of a double room for two adults on [a date next month]." Note where it slows down or stops: homepage, link, dates or prices. Our [free agent check](https://akkrev.com/ai-agent-booking/#free-agent-check) gives you that breakdown in writing.

## Questions

### So does the engine not matter at all?

It matters. In our pilot, some engines took dates in the web address and went straight to prices, while others needed a date picker. But a good engine behind a hidden link can still score poorly.

### Should a hotel switch engine to be agent-friendly?

Not based on a small pilot alone. Switching engines is expensive and affects your whole operation. Check how your current set-up performs for agents first.

### Where can I see results by engine?

On the Agent Booking Index, which shows pilot results for engines used by at least two tested hotels.

### Does a widget or pop-up count against the hotel?

In our pilot, one hotel opened its engine in a slow-loading widget and scored lower than other hotels on the same engine. A plain link to the engine page tends to be simpler for agents.
