# What is agentic commerce?

> Agentic commerce is buying done by AI agents for a person: the agent searches, chooses and pays, with the person approving. Travel is an early category.

**Agentic commerce** means purchases made by [AI agents](https://akkrev.com/glossary/ai-agent/) acting for a person. Instead of a guest browsing ten hotel websites, the guest tells an agent what they want and the agent finds, compares and books it, usually asking for approval before payment.

## What it needs to work

- **Readable offers.** The agent has to understand what's for sale, at what total price, with what conditions.
- **A path to buy.** Either a website the agent can operate, or a protocol built for agents, such as the [Agentic Commerce Protocol](https://akkrev.com/glossary/agentic-commerce-protocol/) or [Universal Commerce Protocol](https://akkrev.com/glossary/universal-commerce-protocol/).
- **Safe payment.** Agent payments use one-time cards or tokens so the merchant never sees the guest's real card, as in Meta's Muse, which pays through Link by Stripe. Standards such as the [Agent Payments Protocol](https://akkrev.com/glossary/agent-payments-protocol/) aim to record what the person approved.

## Why travel is early

Trips have clear goals (dates, place, budget) and lots of tedious comparison, which is exactly what agents are good at. Instinct's founder has said travel is about half of what its users book through it.

## What it means for hotels

Hotels that agents can book direct keep the booking and the guest relationship. Hotels they can't book are either skipped or reached through an [online travel agency](https://akkrev.com/glossary/online-travel-agency/), with commission.

## Why it matters for AI visibility

Agentic commerce starts with an AI recommendation. The businesses AI names are the ones agents try to buy from.
