# What is a Chrome origin trial?

An **origin trial** is how Google lets websites try an experimental Chrome feature on their live site before it becomes a web standard. A site registers for the trial, gets a token, and adds it to its pages. Visitors using Chrome then get the feature on that site, for the length of the trial.

## Why it comes up with AI agents

[WebMCP](https://akkrev.com/glossary/webmcp/), which lets a website describe its actions (such as "search availability") as tools for agents in the browser, started as an origin trial in Chrome 149. Google has said Gemini in Chrome will support WebMCP APIs. During the trial, only sites that have registered and added a token can use it, and only in Chrome.

## What it means for hotels

Origin trials are early and temporary, and features can change or be withdrawn. They're a useful signal of direction, not something a hotel needs to rely on today. The basics, a booking path agents can find and operate, still matter more.

## Why it matters for AI visibility

Origin trials test new browser features, including some for agents. They're early; AI visibility work pays off now.
