# What is rate parity?

> Rate parity means a hotel offers the same price for the same room on its own website and on booking sites. Agents compare these prices instantly.

**Rate parity** is the practice, and sometimes a contract term, of keeping a room's public price the same across the hotel's own website and [online travel agencies](https://akkrev.com/glossary/online-travel-agency/).

In the UK and EU, competition authorities have restricted "wide" parity clauses that stopped hotels offering lower prices on other sites. Hotels are generally freer to offer better deals on their own website than they once were.

## Why agents change the picture

A person might check two sites. An agent can check ten in a minute. If a hotel's direct price is the same as or better than the OTA's, an agent asked to "find the best price" has every reason to book direct, provided it can get through the hotel's [booking engine](https://akkrev.com/glossary/booking-engine/). If the direct site hides its price behind clicks or logins, the agent sees only the OTA's.

## Why it matters for AI visibility

When your direct rate matches or beats the OTA rate, AI has no reason to send guests to the OTA.
