# What is a virtual card in AI agent payments?

> A virtual card is a one-time or limited-use card number an AI agent pays with, so the merchant never sees the real card. Muse uses Link by Stripe this way.

A **virtual card** is a card number created for a single purchase or a limited use, rather than the number printed on someone's physical card. AI agents increasingly pay with them: the agent gets a card valid for one booking, the merchant charges it as normal, and the person's real card details are never shared.

Meta's Muse, for example, pays through Link by Stripe, which issues one-time card numbers so websites never see the user's real card.

## What it means for hotels

To a hotel's booking engine, a virtual card usually looks like any other card payment. The differences show up later:

- **"Present the card used to book at check-in."** A one-time virtual card can't be presented.
- **Incidental holds.** If the hotel takes a hold at check-in, the guest needs a physical card for that.
- **Refunds.** Refunds go back to the virtual card and on to the guest's account through the issuer.

Hotels whose payment policies say clearly what guests need to bring avoid surprises at the desk. See [incidental holds, deposits and AI agents](https://akkrev.com/blog/incidental-holds-deposits-ai-agents-us/).

## Why it matters for AI visibility

Virtual cards matter for agent payments. Being recommended in the first place depends on AI visibility.
