Room only or B&B? How AI agents compare UK hotel rates with breakfast
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Guests ask agents for 'breakfast included'. When rate names don't say what's included, agents compare the wrong prices and book a competitor or an OTA.
“Two nights in the Peak District, breakfast included, under £300.” Agents get asked this constantly. To answer it, they need to know which of your rates includes breakfast, and the total for each. Many UK hotel booking pages make that harder than it looks.
How rates confuse agents
- Rate names that don’t say what’s included. “Classic”, “Escape”, “Best Available Rate”. Breakfast is mentioned only in the rate details, behind a click.
- Breakfast as an add-on in a later step, priced per person per day.
- Different prices on different sites. OTAs often label rates clearly as “Breakfast included” and agents compare those labels directly with yours.
- Dinner, bed and breakfast packages on a separate offers page.
What the agent does with unclear rates
If it can’t confirm breakfast is included, it either adds the breakfast supplement itself (and may double-count), books a room-only rate and tells the guest breakfast is included (wrong), or picks a competitor whose rate clearly says “breakfast included”.
Why OTAs win this comparison
OTAs standardise rate labels across every hotel: “Breakfast included”, “Free cancellation”, “Pay at the property”. Agents read those labels easily. Your own site’s rate names were written for marketing, not for comparison.
Why breakfast comes up so often
Breakfast is one of the few things guests nearly always mention when booking a UK stay. It’s also where hotels differ most: included, extra, continental only, cooked to order, served in the room, or not offered on Sundays. A request like “breakfast included” sounds simple, but an agent has to match it against your exact offer.
A comparison an agent might make
A guest asks for two nights in Whitby for two adults, breakfast included, under £280.
- Guesthouse A shows “£125 per night, B&B for two”. Total £250. Clear.
- Hotel B shows “Room only £105” and “Bed & breakfast £135” side by side. Total £270 for B&B. Clear.
- Hotel C shows “Coastal Escape £119” with breakfast mentioned in a pop-up description. The agent can’t confirm, so it adds the £14 per person breakfast supplement from the hotel’s restaurant page: £294.
Hotel C may have been the best value. The agent couldn’t tell.
Breakfast and dietary needs
Guests increasingly add conditions: “vegan breakfast options”, “gluten-free”, “early breakfast for a 7am departure”. If your breakfast times and options are only on a restaurant page or menu PDF, agents may not find them before booking.
What this means for AI recommendations
Guests ask AI for “hotels with breakfast included”. AI can only answer for hotels whose rate names and descriptions say so clearly. Room-only and B&B rates that are labelled vaguely make it harder for AI to put you in the answer.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Book two nights at [your hotel] with breakfast included, on the hotel’s own website. Stop before paying. Tell me the total and confirm breakfast is included.” Check the rate it picked and the total. Our free agent check runs this for you.
Questions
Do AI agents add breakfast to a hotel booking?
If the booking engine offers breakfast as an option with a price, an agent can usually add it when the guest asked for it. If breakfast is only arranged at check-in, the agent can't include it in the total.
Why does my agent say breakfast isn't included when it is?
Usually because the rate name doesn't say so and the details are hidden in a pop-up or separate page. Agents rely on clear text next to the price.
Do OTAs show breakfast more clearly than hotel websites?
Often, yes. OTAs use standard labels like 'Breakfast included' across every hotel, which agents can compare directly with other listings.
Can an AI agent book dinner, bed and breakfast?
If the package is a bookable rate with a clear total and inclusions, yes. Packages on a separate offers page or by phone are harder for agents to find and complete.
