Can ChatGPT book a hotel in London for you?
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Yes, sometimes. ChatGPT agent can fill in hotel booking forms, but many independent London hotel sites stop it, so it falls back to an OTA.
Yes, but not always where the hotel would like. If you ask ChatGPT to book a hotel in London, it can search, compare and, in agent mode, go to a website and fill in the booking form for you, asking before it pays. Whether it books the hotel’s own website or a big booking site comes down to one thing: can it get through the hotel’s booking page?
Two ways ChatGPT books hotels
Inside ChatGPT, through travel apps. Expedia and Booking.com have apps inside ChatGPT. They show live prices, photos and availability, and send you to their own sites to finish the booking. Handy for guests, but every booking made that way is an online travel agency booking, with commission for the hotel.
On the open web, with ChatGPT agent. In agent mode, ChatGPT opens websites in its own browser and clicks through them like a person. This is the route that can reach an independent hotel’s own website and book direct.
Where it goes wrong in London
London has thousands of independent hotels, and many use small booking engines added to their sites years ago. The common failure points are:
- A bot wall or CAPTCHA before the booking page loads.
- A date picker inside an embedded widget that ignores the agent’s clicks.
- Rates that only appear after a pop-up or a login for “member prices”.
- A total price that changes late in the flow, once taxes or extras are added.
When that happens the agent doesn’t keep trying for long. It tells the guest it couldn’t complete the booking, or it books the same hotel, or a similar one, through a booking site instead.
What this means for London hotels
If an agent can’t get through, the hotel either loses the booking or pays commission on it. Guests rarely see why: they just see “booked on Booking.com”.
What London guests ask agents for
London requests are unusually specific, because guests know the city is big and expensive. Typical ones:
- “Walking distance to King’s Cross, quiet room, under £220.”
- “Air conditioning, because it’s July.”
- “Somewhere in Bloomsbury with a proper breakfast and early check-in.”
- “Two rooms next to each other for a family.”
Each is a fact the agent has to confirm on the hotel’s own site before it books. Air conditioning is a good example: many older London townhouse hotels don’t have it in every room, and guests now ask about it every summer. If the website says “air conditioning” on the homepage but doesn’t say which room types have it, a careful agent can’t be sure, so it books a hotel that states it per room.
An example of how it plays out
Imagine a 30-room independent hotel near Russell Square (an illustration, not a real hotel). A guest asks ChatGPT agent to book a double for two nights in June with air conditioning. The agent:
- Finds the hotel through search and opens its website.
- Closes the cookie banner.
- Clicks “Book now”, which opens the booking engine in a pop-up window.
- Picks dates in a custom calendar, which takes several tries.
- Sees three room types, but only one says “air-conditioned” in its description.
- Reaches a price that excludes a compulsory city “service charge” added at the last step.
At step 6 the agent compares this total with the same hotel on Booking.com, where the total is clear, and books there. Nothing was broken. The direct booking was lost anyway.
What this means for AI recommendations
In London, ChatGPT can only name a handful of hotels for any one question. Hotels with clear neighbourhood descriptions, consistent facts and good coverage in guides and reviews are the ones it names. The rest depend on guests finding them some other way.
How to check your hotel
Ask ChatGPT agent: “Book a double room for two nights next month at [your hotel] on its own website, and stop before paying. Tell me the total price and cancellation policy.” Watch where it goes and where it stops. Or ask us for a free agent check and we’ll send you the result.
Questions
Does ChatGPT book hotels itself?
ChatGPT agent can open hotel websites, pick dates and fill in booking forms, and it asks you before paying. The Expedia and Booking.com apps inside ChatGPT show live hotel prices, but you finish the booking on their sites.
Will ChatGPT book the hotel's own website or a booking site?
It depends on whether it can get through the hotel's own booking page. If that page blocks it or confuses it, it usually falls back to a big booking site.
