What is the accessibility tree, and why do AI agents read it?
Updated By Akkrev
The accessibility tree is the browser's structured map of a page's buttons, links and text, built for screen readers. Many AI agents read it too.
The accessibility tree is a simplified, structured version of a web page that browsers build for assistive technology such as screen readers. It lists each element with its role and name: “link: Book now”, “button: Search”, “textbox: Arrival date”, “heading: Our rooms”.
Why AI agents use it
Many AI agents read the accessibility tree, alongside or instead of screenshots, because it tells them exactly what’s on the page and what can be clicked. A page with clear, labelled elements is easy for them to operate. In our Agent Booking Index pilot, whether an agent could see a booking link in the page’s structure was one of the scored steps.
What helps and hurts
- Helps: real links and buttons with clear names, labelled form fields, prices as text.
- Hurts: icons with no label, clickable images with no text, date pickers built from unlabelled boxes, content drawn on a canvas, and booking widgets that only appear after scripts run.
The overlap with accessibility
What makes a booking page usable by screen readers largely makes it usable by AI agents too. Hotels that care about accessible booking for guests with disabilities get a head start with agents.
Why it matters for AI visibility
The same structure helps AI assistants summarise your pages. Clear headings and labelled elements make your facts easier to read and repeat.
