What is bot management?
Updated By Akkrev
Bot management is security that detects automated visitors and blocks or challenges them. Set too strictly on a hotel site, it also blocks guests' AI agents.
Bot management covers the tools that decide what to do with automated traffic: allow, challenge with a CAPTCHA, slow down or block. Content delivery networks such as Cloudflare, hosting companies and some booking engines include it.
The hotel problem
Hotels have good reasons to block bots: rate scraping, fake bookings, card testing. But a blunt setting can’t tell a scraper from a guest’s agent, and blocks both. A hotel can lose AI recommendations (if AI crawlers are blocked) and AI bookings (if agents are blocked) without anyone noticing, because nothing visibly breaks for human visitors.
The direction of travel
Verified-bot lists and signed requests, such as Web Bot Auth, let security tools allow known AI agents while still stopping the rest. Whether a hotel benefits depends on its settings.
Why it matters for AI visibility
Strict bot rules can block AI crawlers as well as bad bots, which limits what AI learns from your own site.
