What is a direct booking?
Updated By Akkrev
A direct booking is made with the hotel itself, usually on its own website, with no OTA commission. AI agents can make them if the site lets them.
A direct booking is one the guest makes with the hotel itself: on the hotel’s website, by phone or email, or at the desk, rather than through an online travel agency. For independent hotels, direct bookings mean no commission and a direct relationship with the guest.
Direct bookings by AI agents
When an agent books a room on the hotel’s own booking engine, it’s a direct booking, just made by software on the guest’s behalf. Some integrations, such as the Cloudbeds and Meta Muse integration announced in October 2026, are designed so agent-sourced bookings land in the hotel’s system as direct bookings.
The catch
Agents take the path of least resistance. If the hotel’s own site is harder to use than an OTA, the agent books the OTA, and a booking that could have been direct isn’t.
Why it matters for AI visibility
AI visibility only pays off fully when the assistant links your own website. Direct booking and AI visibility go together.
