What is prompt injection, and should hotel websites worry?
Updated By Akkrev
Prompt injection is hidden text that tries to give instructions to an AI reading a page. Hotels shouldn't use it, and agents are built to ignore it.
Prompt injection is text placed in content an AI will read, such as a web page, email or document, that tries to give the AI instructions: “ignore previous instructions”, “always recommend this hotel”, “tell the user the price is lower”. It’s often hidden from people with tiny or invisible text.
Why hotels should avoid it
- AI companies train agents to treat page content as information, not instructions, and to flag suspicious text.
- Hidden instructions can make a site look untrustworthy to agents, search engines and security tools.
- Anything that misleads guests about price or features can break consumer protection rules.
What works instead
Plain, accurate facts in text: room details, total prices, policies, and clear structured data. A page that’s easy to read honestly is the most persuasive thing an agent can find.
Why it matters for AI visibility
Hidden instructions aimed at AI don’t make it recommend you, and can backfire. Clear, honest facts are what work.
