How to see traffic from ChatGPT and other AI tools in Google Analytics
Updated By Akkrev
Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot show up in your analytics if you know where to look. A simple way for hotels and restaurants to find them.
When a guest clicks a link in an AI answer, they usually arrive with a referrer from the AI tool’s domain.
Domains to look for
- chatgpt.com (and chat.openai.com)
- perplexity.ai
- gemini.google.com
- copilot.microsoft.com
- claude.ai
In Google Analytics 4
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the dimension to “Session source”. Search for the domains above. To track them together, create a custom channel group for “AI assistants” that matches those sources.
What it won’t show
Many AI recommendations never produce a click: the guest reads the name and searches for you later, or books on an OTA. So referral traffic undercounts AI’s influence. Track mentions too.
