Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my restaurant or hotel?
Updated By Akkrev
No. You can't buy a place in ChatGPT's answer. You can now buy a labelled ad underneath it. What each one is, what it costs and which one a venue needs first.
Key points
- No. There is no fee, listing or partner programme that puts your venue inside ChatGPT's recommendation.
- OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads appear separately, clearly labelled, below the answer.
- Ads only reach users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and business users see no ads.
- The recommendation itself comes from what ChatGPT finds and trusts on the web: your website, listings, reviews and press.
- For most independent venues, getting into the organic answer is the cheaper and longer-lasting win.
The answer
Free. Decided by what ChatGPT finds and trusts. Cannot be bought.
The ad
Paid per click. Labelled as sponsored. Shown below the answer to some users.
No. You cannot pay ChatGPT to recommend your restaurant, hotel or café. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Since 2026 you can buy a labelled ad that appears below some answers, but that is a separate, clearly marked slot. The recommendation itself is decided by what ChatGPT finds and trusts about you on the web.
This is one of the first questions owners ask once they notice guests using ChatGPT, so here is the full picture.
How a ChatGPT recommendation is decided
When a guest asks “best Sunday roast in Islington” or “quiet hotel in York with parking”, ChatGPT usually runs a live web search, reads what comes back and writes an answer. OpenAI’s own guidance for website owners is short: any public website can appear, don’t block its OAI-SearchBot crawler, and results are ranked “using multiple factors”. It adds that placement is not guaranteed.
In practice the venues it names are the ones that are well covered across the web. Studies of hotel answers show ChatGPT leans on TripAdvisor and Booking.com. Studies of restaurant answers show Google listings, review sites, booking platforms and local “best of” guides. See what the research says gets recommended for the numbers.
What ChatGPT ads are
OpenAI announced ads in January 2026 and set out five principles. The two that matter for you:
- Answer independence. Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
- Clear separation. Ads appear below the answer, clearly labelled as sponsored.
Ads are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. People on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not see ads.
A hotel marketing agency that ran early hotel campaigns reported clicks costing around $3 to $3.50, click-through rates of 1.6% to 1.9% and a minimum daily budget of $25. The platform was in beta and changing every couple of weeks, so treat those numbers as a snapshot. Read our full guide to ChatGPT ads for hotels and restaurants.
Answer vs ad: which one a venue needs
| Organic answer | ChatGPT ad | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No fee to ChatGPT | Pay per click or impression |
| Who sees it | Every user who asks a matching question | Free and Go users only |
| How it looks | Named as a recommendation | Labelled as sponsored |
| How long it lasts | As long as your information stays strong | Stops when the budget stops |
| What decides it | Your website, listings, reviews and mentions | Your bid, targeting and ad |
Most guests trust the answer more than the ad. And because the answer comes from your listings, reviews and website, the work that gets you into it also helps on Google, Maps and booking sites.
What you can do instead of paying
- Make sure ChatGPT can read you. Check your website does not block OAI-SearchBot and that menus, rooms and opening hours are text, not PDFs or images.
- Get your listings complete and identical. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, TripAdvisor and your booking platforms.
- Be described for the questions guests ask. If you take dogs, have parking or do a vegan menu, say so clearly on your site and listings.
- Earn reviews and mentions. Steady recent reviews and coverage in local guides or press make you a safer pick.
- Check what ChatGPT says now. Ask it the questions your guests ask, in a logged-out or temporary chat, and note who gets named and why.
Watch out for
- Anyone offering a “ChatGPT listing” or “guaranteed AI placement” for a fee. There is no such product from OpenAI.
- Fake or incentivised reviews to game AI. They break platform rules and are illegal in the UK under the DMCC Act.

Questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my restaurant?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. You can pay for a labelled ad shown below some answers, but the recommendation itself is decided by what ChatGPT finds about you on the web.
Is there a ChatGPT business listing I can sign up for?
There is no paid listing that places you in answers. ChatGPT builds local answers from web search, maps data, listings and reviews. Keeping your Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp and TripAdvisor profiles complete is the closest thing to a listing.
Do OpenTable or Booking.com pay to appear in ChatGPT?
Some booking platforms have their own apps or integrations inside ChatGPT. Those let users book through that platform. They do not change which venues ChatGPT recommends in a normal answer.
Will buying ChatGPT ads help me appear in the organic answer?
OpenAI says no. Ads and answers are kept separate. Treat ads as a separate channel with its own budget and measurement.
Can an agency guarantee I'll be recommended by ChatGPT?
No one can guarantee it. OpenAI's own documentation says placement is not guaranteed. Be wary of anyone who promises a fixed position.
