Google AI Overviews and restaurants: who gets named
Updated By Akkrev
AI Overviews now answer many restaurant searches before the map. How they pick places, and what restaurants can check.
For many searches, such as “best ramen in Leeds” or “restaurants open late near me”, Google now shows an AI Overview above the results. It names a few places and summarises why.
What it draws on
AI Overviews combine Google’s local data (Business Profiles, reviews, Maps) with web pages that answer the question, such as guides and articles.
Why it changes things for restaurants
The map pack still appears, but the AI summary sits above it. A restaurant named in the summary gets attention before the guest ever reaches the map.
What decides who’s named
- A specific, accurate category and complete attributes.
- Reviews that mention the dish or occasion searched for.
- Being listed in the guides and articles Google draws on.
Check it
Search the questions your diners ask, signed out and on a phone, and note whether an AI Overview appears and who it names.
