How reviews shape AI recommendations for hotels and restaurants
Updated By Akkrev
AI assistants summarise reviews to decide who to recommend and for what. Why what reviews say matters more than the star rating.
AI assistants read reviews the way a careful guest would, only faster and at scale.
What AI takes from reviews
- What you’re good for. “Great for families”, “perfect for a date”, “best breakfast in town”.
- Specific facts. Parking, noise, dogs, portion sizes, Wi-Fi.
- Consistency. One glowing review is noise; fifty that mention the same thing is a signal.
- Recency. Recent reviews carry more weight for questions about what a place is like now.
Why the star rating isn’t everything
A 4.6 restaurant that reviewers describe as “the best ramen in Leeds” will be named for “best ramen in Leeds” ahead of a 4.8 restaurant whose reviews say “lovely evening”.
What you can do
- Ask happy guests for a review, and ask them to mention what they enjoyed.
- Reply to reviews, especially to correct facts.
- Never buy or write fake reviews: it’s illegal in both the UK and the US, and it doesn’t work for long.
