Can ChatGPT book a hotel in New York for you?
USUpdated By Akkrev
ChatGPT can search New York hotels and, in agent mode, book on a hotel's own site. When it books direct, and when it ends up on Expedia.
Yes. ChatGPT can recommend New York hotels, show live prices through the Expedia and Booking.com apps inside ChatGPT, and, in agent mode, open a hotel’s own website and work through the booking for you, asking before it pays. Whether you end up booked direct or through an online travel agency depends on what happens at the hotel’s website.
Two routes to a booking
The travel apps. Ask ChatGPT for hotels and it may surface results from the Expedia or Booking.com apps, with photos and prices. You finish on their sites. Convenient, but it’s always an OTA booking.
ChatGPT agent. In agent mode, ChatGPT runs its own browser. It can go to an independent hotel’s website, choose dates and a room, read the total and policies, and fill in your details.
Why New York is a hard test
- Taxes and fees. New York City hotel stays carry several taxes, and some hotels add mandatory “facility” or “amenity” fees. Under the FTC’s fees rule, mandatory fees must be in the total price shown up front; taxes can be shown separately but must be disclosed before payment. If a site shows them late, the agent’s quote is off. See the FTC junk fee rule and AI agents.
- Rates that change fast. Prices move by the hour in busy weeks.
- Security. Big-city hotel sites are scraping targets and often use strong bot protection, which can challenge agents too.
- Member rates. Many boutique hotels push “join for the best rate”, which agents don’t see.
What usually happens
If the hotel’s booking flow is clear, the agent books direct. If it hits a challenge, a confusing widget or a price it can’t confirm, it falls back to an OTA, often for the same hotel.
What New York guests ask for
- “Walkable to Broadway theaters, quiet room, under $350 a night all in.”
- “Near Penn Station for an early train.”
- “Brooklyn, near the park, room for a crib.”
- “A hotel with a gym and late check-out.”
Location precision matters in New York: “Midtown” covers a lot of ground. Agents use maps, but they also look for the hotel’s own statements such as “four minutes’ walk to Times Square subway station”. Hotels that state distances to landmarks and stations give agents something firm to compare.
The “facility fee” problem
Many New York hotels charge a daily facility or destination fee covering things like Wi-Fi and fitness access. Under the FTC rule it must be in the up-front total. Where it still appears late on a hotel’s own site, ChatGPT agent will either quote the wrong total or, after noticing, trust an OTA listing that shows it properly.
What this means for AI recommendations
New York questions are answered with a short list, often for a specific neighbourhood. Hotels that are well described for the neighbourhoods and occasions guests ask about, and whose prices AI can read, are the ones named. Others lose the guest before the search starts.
How to check your hotel
Ask ChatGPT agent: “Book a king room at [your hotel] for two nights next month on the hotel’s own website. Stop before paying. Tell me the total including taxes and fees, and the cancellation policy.” Compare with your real total. Our free agent check runs this for you.
Questions
Does ChatGPT include New York hotel taxes in the price?
Only if it can see them. New York City hotel stays carry several taxes. If a hotel's site shows taxes only at the last step, ChatGPT may quote a lower total than the guest will pay.
Can ChatGPT book Broadway hotel packages?
Only if the package is bookable on the hotel's site as a rate with a clear total. Packages on separate offer pages or by phone are hard for agents to complete.
