Can Perplexity's Comet browser book a hotel?
USUpdated By Akkrev
Perplexity's Comet browser has a built-in AI agent that can navigate sites and shop. How it handles hotel research and booking on independent sites.
Comet is Perplexity’s web browser, launched in 2025, with an AI assistant built into every page. It can summarize what you’re looking at, compare options across tabs and navigate sites for you, including shopping and booking flows. Hotels are a natural use: research, compare, book.
How Comet approaches a hotel booking
- It researches using Perplexity’s answer engine, which cites sources, so hotels whose own pages state facts clearly are more likely to be quoted.
- It opens the hotel’s website in the browser and can operate the booking page: dates, room, guest details.
- It hands back to the user for sensitive steps.
Where it struggles
The same places every browser-based agent does:
- Bot protection and CAPTCHAs.
- Embedded booking widgets and iframes.
- Totals that change late with fees or taxes.
- Member-only rates and app-only deals.
- Rooms that are “call to book”.
Perplexity’s crawlers
Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to index pages for its answers and Perplexity-User to fetch pages live for a user’s question. Hotels that block these, often by accident through security settings, are harder for Comet to research and recommend. See AI crawler.
Answer engine first, agent second
Comet is built on Perplexity’s answer engine, which shows its sources. That changes how hotels get chosen. Before the agent clicks anything, Perplexity has usually summarised options from pages it trusts: the hotel’s own site, review sites, listings and local guides. A hotel whose website states the facts a guest asked about (parking, quiet rooms, pet rules, walking distance) is more likely to be cited, and the citation is often where the agent goes to book.
If the hotel’s site is thin or blocked, Perplexity relies on third-party listings, and the most convenient booking link from those is usually an OTA.
What a typical Comet booking request looks like
A guest browsing a hotel’s page might simply say: “Book this place for the 14th and 15th, two adults, cheapest refundable rate.” Because the guest is already on the hotel’s site, this is a strong chance for a direct booking. The agent works through the page in front of it. Whether it succeeds depends on the booking engine: if the widget doesn’t respond, the agent may open a new search and find the hotel on an OTA instead, even though the guest started on the hotel’s own website.
Where Comet fits among agents
Comet is one of several agentic browsers. Gemini in Chrome, ChatGPT agent and Claude’s browser tools behave similarly on hotel sites. Testing with one gives a good idea of the others, but not a guarantee: each has its own strengths with date pickers, pop-ups and iframes.
What this means for AI recommendations
Perplexity shows its sources, so you can see which sites it relied on when it named a hotel. That makes it a useful test: if Perplexity quotes only OTAs and review sites for your hotel, your own website isn’t yet a source it trusts.
How to check
Open your hotel’s website in Comet and ask the assistant to book two nights and stop before paying. Note whether it reached a priced room and whether the total and policy were right. Or get our free agent check.
Questions
Does Perplexity send hotels traffic?
Yes. Perplexity cites sources with links, and its Comet browser can open and operate hotel websites. Visits show up in analytics with perplexity.ai as the referrer.
Should hotels allow PerplexityBot?
If a hotel wants to be cited in Perplexity answers, its site needs to be readable by PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. Blocking them, often by accident through security settings, makes the hotel harder to recommend.
Is Comet free?
Perplexity has offered Comet more widely over time; availability and features depend on the user's plan and region.
Does Comet hand control back before payment?
Like other mainstream agents, Comet involves the user for sensitive steps such as purchases.
