'Kids stay free' policies and AI agents (US hotels)
USUpdated By Akkrev
Families ask agents to find hotels where kids stay free. Age limits, bed rules and breakfast terms need to be clear for agents to apply them.
“Find a hotel in Orlando where kids stay free” is a classic family travel search. Many US hotels, including independents, offer some version of it. When a parent asks an AI agent, the agent has to understand exactly what the policy means at each hotel.
What varies between policies
- Age limit. Under 12, under 17, under 18.
- Number of children. One or two per room.
- Bedding. Existing beds only, or a free rollaway or crib. See cribs and rollaway beds.
- Meals. Free breakfast for kids, or room only.
- Occupancy. Kids count toward the room’s maximum.
- Dates. Some policies exclude holidays.
What agents need
An agent booking for “two adults and kids aged 6 and 13” needs to know whether both children are free, whether they fit in the room, and what the total is. It needs that in text, near the rates.
Where it goes wrong
Policy on a separate page. “Kids stay free” on the homepage, but the booking engine charges for children.
Age limit unclear. “Kids stay free” without an age.
Occupancy limits hidden. The engine lets the agent add four guests to a room for three.
Breakfast surprise. The family assumes breakfast is free for kids. It isn’t.
The total matters
Agents compare totals. If your engine applies the policy correctly when child ages are entered, the agent sees the right number. If it doesn’t, the agent may overquote and choose another hotel. See best available rate.
Families need more
Families also ask about bed types, suites and connecting rooms. See two queen beds or one king? and suites and connecting rooms.
Clear and honest
A clear line near rates helps: “Children under 12 stay free in their parents’ room using existing beds. Breakfast for children $12. Maximum four guests per room.” Agents can read it, apply it and explain it.
Ages in the booking engine
Many engines ask for each child’s age. That’s good for agents, because it lets the engine apply the right price. If yours only asks for “number of children”, the policy may not be applied consistently.
The UK version
UK hotels handle children differently but face the same issues. See family rooms and AI agents (UK).
What this means for AI recommendations
Families ask AI for hotels where kids stay free. Hotels that state the policy and age limits clearly are the ones AI can name for that question.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Book a room at [your hotel] for two adults and children aged 6 and 13 for two nights from [a date], on the hotel’s own website. Tell me whether the kids stay free and the total. Stop before paying.” If the answer doesn’t match your policy, families’ agents get the same. Our free agent check can run this.
Questions
What does 'kids stay free' usually mean?
Children under a set age stay in their parents' room at no extra charge, using existing bedding. Meals and extra beds may still cost extra.
Why do agents need the age limit?
Policies vary from under 12 to under 18. An agent booking for a family with a 13-year-old needs to know whether they count.
Do kids count toward room occupancy?
Usually yes. A free child still takes a place in the room's maximum occupancy.
Do booking engines apply the policy?
Many do, if child ages are entered. If the engine charges for children anyway, the agent's total will differ from the policy.
Do OTAs show kids stay free policies?
Often, in a standard format. If your own site is less clear, an agent may trust the OTA's version.
