Which currency does your booking engine show AI agents?
Updated By Akkrev
Two UK hotels in our pilot showed prices in US dollars to our agent by default. Why currency matters when an agent compares and quotes hotel prices.
A guest in Manchester asks their AI assistant for a hotel in York. The agent visits a hotel’s booking engine and sees a price in US dollars. What does it tell the guest?
It’s a real scenario. In our pilot of 28 independent UK hotels, two booking engines showed our scripted agent prices in US dollars by default. Both still passed, because prices were readable for the right dates. But currency adds a quiet risk.
Why it happens
Booking engines often set currency based on where a visitor appears to be. They look at the IP address, browser language or both. People usually browse from home, so this works. Agents often run in cloud data centres, and many of those are in the US. An engine may decide the agent is American and show dollars.
Some engines show a converted price for display while charging in the hotel’s own currency. Others actually charge in the displayed currency. The page doesn’t always make clear which.
Where it can go wrong
- Comparison. An agent comparing hotels may compare a dollar figure with pound figures from other sites. A good agent converts; a careless one may not.
- Quoting. The guest may be told a price in dollars when they’ll pay in pounds, or the reverse.
- Rounding and fees. Conversion can produce prices that differ slightly from what the hotel lists on online travel agencies. That can look like a parity problem when it isn’t.
- Card charges. If the hotel charges in pounds and the guest’s card is in dollars, their bank sets the final amount.
None of this stops a booking. It makes the agent’s answer less reliable, and reliability is what makes an agent trust a source.
For US hotels
The same logic runs the other way. A US inn’s engine may show euros or pounds to an agent running in Europe. As more agents run from different regions, it’s worth knowing what your engine does.
What a clear page looks like
A page that’s easy for agents and people:
- Shows the hotel’s charging currency by default, or clearly labels converted prices as estimates.
- States the currency code or symbol next to every price as text.
- Keeps a currency switcher that’s easy to read and use.
What the guest actually pays
The safest assumption for an agent is that the guest pays in the hotel’s own currency, unless the page says otherwise. When an engine shows a converted figure with no note, the agent has to guess. A clear label, such as “prices shown in USD for guidance; you will be charged in GBP”, removes the guesswork for agents and guests.
What this means for AI recommendations
When AI compares prices across hotels, mixed currencies cause errors. A wrong conversion can make you look more expensive than you are, which is enough to drop you from a recommendation.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Open [your booking engine link] and tell me the price of a double room for two adults on [a date], and which currency it’s in.” Try once from a normal browser and ask someone abroad to try too. If the agent reports a currency you don’t charge in, ask your booking engine provider how its currency setting works. Our free agent check notes the currency it sees.
Questions
Why would a UK hotel show US dollars?
Many booking engines pick a currency from the visitor's location or browser settings. Agents often run in cloud data centres, which may be in the US, so the engine may guess dollars.
Is a converted price wrong?
It's usually an estimate. The guest may be charged in pounds, and the final amount in dollars depends on their card's exchange rate. An agent quoting the dollar figure as the price could mislead.
Does this affect US hotels?
Less often, but an agent running outside the US could see another currency on a US engine. The same check applies.
