Do AI agents pay B&B deposits? Why bank transfers stop agent bookings
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Many UK B&Bs still take deposits by bank transfer or phone. AI agents can't complete those, so they book a property that takes a card online.
Agents can pay by card, with the guest’s approval. They can’t pay by bank transfer, phone call or “we’ll send you our details”. Many UK B&Bs still take deposits that way, which quietly rules them out of agent bookings.
How small UK places take deposits
- Card details taken by phone.
- “Email us and we’ll send our bank details for a 25% deposit.”
- An online booking that’s only “provisional” until a transfer arrives.
- A card guarantee with the deposit charged manually later.
These made sense when guests booked by phone and email. Each needs a human on the guest’s side who waits, copies details or makes a call.
How agents handle payment
An agent that reaches a payment page can, with approval, enter the guest’s card or a one-time virtual card. Meta’s Muse, for example, uses Link by Stripe for one-time cards so the site never sees the guest’s real card. Other agents stop at the payment page and hand over to the guest.
What none of them do well is “wait for the B&B to reply, then pay by transfer”. If confirmation depends on that, the agent can’t finish, so it books somewhere that confirms instantly.
The knock-on effect
Even guests who’d happily pay a deposit by transfer don’t get the chance. The agent has already moved on to a property with instant online booking, often the same B&B’s listing on an OTA, which takes the payment and the commission.
Provisional bookings
Some B&B booking systems accept a request online but mark it “provisional” until the owner confirms or a deposit arrives. For a person, that’s a short wait. For an agent, it’s an unfinished task: it can’t tell the guest the room is booked. Many agents will keep looking for a property that confirms immediately, and book that instead, leaving a provisional request the owner later chases and finds abandoned.
What instant confirmation looks like
Agents can complete: dates chosen, room selected, total shown, card taken or guaranteed, confirmation shown on screen and emailed. Owners can still check bookings and contact guests afterwards. The difference is that the guest, and their agent, leave with a confirmed booking.
What this means for AI recommendations
B&Bs that require a bank transfer are hard for agents to book, so AI assistants may steer guests to places they can book in one go. Clear payment terms help AI describe you accurately.
How to check
Ask an agent to book a room at your B&B for specific dates on your own website and stop before paying. If it reaches a card payment page, you’re fine. If it ends with “email to confirm”, “call to book” or “bank transfer details will be sent”, agents can’t complete your bookings. Our free agent check shows exactly where it stops. Questions
Can an AI agent pay by card?
Yes, with the guest's approval. Some agents hand the payment step back to the guest; others, such as Meta's Muse, pay with one-time card numbers through Link by Stripe.
Can an AI agent send a bank transfer?
Mainstream consumer agents don't set up bank transfers on a guest's behalf, and they can't wait days for a B&B to confirm a deposit has arrived.
Will an AI agent leave a booking request for the B&B to confirm?
It might submit one, but it can't tell the guest the room is booked. Many agents keep looking until they find a property that confirms immediately.
What payment methods can AI agents use for hotel bookings?
Mostly card payments, with the guest's approval, sometimes using one-time virtual cards. Bank transfers and payment by phone are generally out of reach.
