Enquiry-only hotels and AI agents in the UK
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Three of four failures in our UK pilot had no live online booking: enquiry forms, email only, or a dead Book button. Why agents can't help those hotels.
Some of the UK’s best-loved hotels still don’t take online bookings. A guest fills in a form, sends an email or phones, and someone replies with availability. For many loyal guests that’s part of the charm. For an AI agent it’s a dead end.
What the pilot showed
Our pilot tested 28 independent UK hotels on 20 October 2026. Four failed outright. Three of those four had no working online booking for rooms:
- Two linked “Booking” to an enquiry form. One of them had an online booking widget, but it was for the restaurant.
- One had a “Book now” form that didn’t submit anywhere. The only working route was an email address.
The fourth failure was a technical route problem, not a missing engine. The details are on our findings page.
What an agent does with an enquiry form
An agent asked to book a room wants a confirmed room at a known price. An enquiry form gives neither. The agent may:
- Tell the guest it can’t book this hotel and suggest they contact it.
- Book a similar hotel that it can confirm.
- Find the same hotel on an online travel agency and book there, if the hotel sells through one.
Any of those can cost the hotel. The first adds friction the guest asked the agent to remove. The second loses the guest. The third costs commission.
The hidden version: a Book button that isn’t
The most surprising failure was a hotel whose website looked bookable. It had a clear “Book now” button and a form with date fields. Filling it in did nothing. A guest would probably phone. An agent may simply report that booking failed. If your site has a form, test that it works from start to finish.
When enquiry-only makes sense
Not every place should be instantly bookable. Exclusive-use venues, houses that sell wedding weekends, and places with very complex packages may prefer a conversation. That’s a business choice. The point is to make it knowingly, and to tell agents clearly how to reach you, rather than leaving them to guess.
Many hotels sit in between: most rooms bookable online, a few special rooms or packages by enquiry. That works well for agents as long as the standard rooms are bookable.
What this means for AI recommendations
If you only take enquiries, AI can still recommend you, but only if it understands how to book. Clear contact details and response times help AI describe the next step correctly.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Book one night for two adults at [your hotel] on [a date next month] on the hotel’s own website. Stop before paying.” If it says it can only send an enquiry, or offers an online travel agency, you know what guests’ agents are seeing. Our free agent check gives you a written result.
Questions
Can an AI agent send an enquiry for a guest?
Some agents may fill in an enquiry form, but the guest gets no confirmed room or price. Agents built to book will usually prefer a hotel, or a channel, where they can confirm the stay.
Why do some UK hotels still work by enquiry?
Often for good reasons: exclusive-use houses, complex packages, a small team that wants to talk to every guest, or rooms sold mainly through agents and tour operators.
Does an enquiry-only hotel lose all AI bookings?
Not necessarily. If it sells through online travel agencies, an agent may book it there. But the direct route is closed to the agent, and the hotel pays commission on what it gets.
What should an enquiry-only hotel tell agents?
That rooms are booked by enquiry, how long a reply usually takes, and the best way to get in touch. An agent can then set the guest's expectations instead of reporting a failure.
