Why does AI recommend one hotel over another?
Updated By Akkrev
Two similar hotels, one recommended by ChatGPT and one ignored. The differences AI actually sees, compared side by side.
Two boutique hotels in the same town, similar prices and reviews. Only one is named when a guest asks for “a boutique hotel with parking”.
| Hotel A (named) | Hotel B (not named) | |
|---|---|---|
| Parking | “Free private car park, 12 spaces” on site and listings | Mentioned only in an FAQ PDF |
| Location | “Five minutes’ walk from the abbey” | “Central location” |
| Rooms | Plain descriptions next to creative names | Creative names only |
| Prices | Visible on the site | Only inside a booking widget |
| Coverage | In a newspaper’s “best boutique hotels” list | No coverage |
| Link AI uses | Hotel’s own site | Booking.com |
The pattern
AI matches the guest’s words to facts it can read, and prefers hotels that several sources agree about. Hotel B isn’t worse. It’s harder for AI to recommend.
