What is Google-Extended?
Updated By Akkrev
Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls whether Google may use a site's content to train Gemini. It doesn't affect Google Search rankings.
Google-Extended isn’t a separate crawler. It’s a name a website can use in robots.txt to tell Google whether content collected by Googlebot may be used to train and ground Gemini models.
What it does and doesn’t affect
- Blocking Google-Extended opts the site out of Gemini training use.
- It doesn’t remove the site from Google Search.
- It doesn’t control AI Overviews or AI Mode, which are part of Search and governed by Googlebot.
For hotels
Most hotels want to be described accurately by Gemini, so blocking Google-Extended is rarely useful. As with every AI crawler choice, the risk is blocking by accident, through a template or plugin, rather than by decision.
Why it matters for AI visibility
Google-Extended controls whether Gemini can train on your content. It doesn’t affect Google Search, but it’s worth understanding before you change it.
