What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is Google’s standard for agent-led buying. A merchant connects its catalogue and checkout so that Google’s AI surfaces, including AI Mode, Gemini and YouTube Shopping, can complete a purchase for the user.
By September 2026 it was live with around 16,000 verified stores, almost all of them selling physical products.
UCP and hotels
Hotel stays are harder to sell through retail-style protocols. A room’s price depends on dates, number of guests, length of stay and rate plan, and there are taxes, fees and cancellation rules. That’s why hotel bookings in AI tools still mostly go through travel platforms or through agents operating the hotel’s own booking engine.

Why it matters for AI visibility
UCP is about agent checkout. Being chosen by the assistant comes first.
