Can Gemini in Chrome book a hotel for you?
USUpdated By Akkrev
Chrome's auto browse lets Gemini open hotel sites, compare prices and work through bookings. Here's how it handles independent US hotel websites.
Yes, where the feature is available. Google began rolling out auto browse in Chrome in January 2026: Gemini can open websites, click through them and complete tasks such as comparing airline and hotel prices for a trip. Because it uses Chrome itself, it sees the same hotel websites a guest does.
What it does well
- Opening several hotel sites in parallel and comparing prices for the same dates.
- Reading clear facts from pages: parking, pets, breakfast, cancellation.
- Following a standard booking flow and handing control back to you before payment.
Where independent hotel sites trip it up
- Bot protection that challenges automated sessions.
- Booking widgets in iframes or with custom date pickers.
- Totals that change late with fees, or taxes shown only at the last step.
- Member-only prices behind sign-up.
- Phone-only rooms and “contact us” packages.
When Gemini can’t complete the booking on the hotel’s site, it usually offers alternatives, which often means an OTA.
WebMCP: what’s coming
Google said at I/O 2026 that Chrome’s experimental WebMCP origin trial starts in Chrome 149, and that Gemini in Chrome will support WebMCP APIs. That lets sites expose actions like “search availability” directly to the agent. It’s early; for now, Gemini operates hotel sites the way people do.
Why Gemini in Chrome matters for independents
Chrome is the most widely used browser in the US. An agent built into it doesn’t need special partnerships to reach a hotel; it uses the same website the guest would. That’s an opportunity for independent hotels: no integration needed, no fees, just a booking flow that works.
It’s also a risk. Chrome’s agent will see every slow page, every pop-up and every confusing widget, and it can compare your site with an OTA’s in seconds.
Google’s other signals
Gemini’s agent works alongside Google’s other AI features. In October 2026, Google added more inline links to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a top section for official sites when only a few sites offer a task. A hotel’s own site, if it clearly offers booking for specific dates, is the kind of “official site” that section is designed to surface.
Google also identifies some agent traffic with the Google-Agent user agent, so hotels can see when Google-based agents visit.
A realistic test
Try a request that matches how your guests think: “Book the cheapest refundable king room at [hotel] for March 6 to 8, with parking, and tell me the total including fees.” Then try the same for a competitor. The difference in how far Gemini gets is the difference in who gets the direct booking.
What this means for AI recommendations
Gemini in Chrome reads the page the guest is on and the wider web. Hotels with clear, readable facts on their own site are easier for Gemini to summarise and recommend accurately.
How to check
In Chrome with Gemini, ask it to book two nights at your hotel on your own website and stop before paying. Note how far it gets. If you don’t have access, our free agent check runs it for you. For a UK example, see Can Gemini book a hotel in the Lake District?
Questions
Is Gemini in Chrome available to everyone?
Google has been rolling out auto browse gradually since January 2026. Availability depends on the user's plan, country and settings.
Does Gemini in Chrome use the hotel's own website?
Yes. It operates the site in the browser like a person would, which means any hotel can be booked without an integration, if its booking flow works for agents.
Does Gemini in Chrome pay for the hotel?
It works through the booking and hands control back to the user for sensitive steps such as payment.
