Cribs and rollaway beds: what AI agents need to know (US)
USUpdated By Akkrev
Parents ask agents to make sure a crib is waiting. If cribs and rollaways are a comments-box request with no confirmation, agents can't promise one.
Traveling with a baby or toddler means one question above all: will there be somewhere safe for them to sleep? Parents asking an AI assistant to book a hotel will often add “and make sure they have a crib”. The agent’s ability to deliver depends on how the hotel handles cribs and rollaways.
What parents’ agents ask
- Is a crib available, and is it a full crib or a portable one?
- Is there a charge?
- Can it be reserved, or is it first come, first served?
- Does it fit in the room type being booked?
- For older kids: is a rollaway bed available, at what cost and in which rooms?
Three common set-ups
Bookable add-on. The booking engine lets the guest add a crib or rollaway, with a price if there is one. The agent can select it, and the hotel knows. Best for agents.
Request in a comments box. The guest types “crib please”. The hotel may or may not see it in time, and there’s no confirmation. The agent can ask but can’t promise.
Call ahead. The website says “contact us to request a crib”. An agent can’t.
Room types matter
A rollaway doesn’t fit in every room. Some rooms are already at maximum occupancy with two queens. If the booking engine lets an agent add a rollaway to a room that can’t take one, the family may find out on arrival. State which rooms allow extra beds. See two queen beds or one king?.
Fees
Rollaways often have a nightly charge. Cribs are usually free, but not always. Agents comparing hotels for families should include any charges. If they’re only added at check-in, the agent’s total will be wrong.
Limited supply
Most hotels have a few cribs and rollaways. On busy weekends they run out. A hotel that can track them as bookable inventory gives guests certainty. One that can’t should say so, so agents can set expectations.
Families need more than a crib
Cribs are one part of a family booking. Others include suites and connecting rooms, children’s ages and breakfast. See suites and connecting rooms and half-term family breaks for a UK view.
Safety
Parents care about safe sleep. A short note on crib type and bedding helps parents, and agents answering their questions. Keep it factual.
What this means for AI recommendations
Families ask AI for “hotels with cribs” or “rooms that sleep five”. AI can only include hotels that state these facts. If your family details live only in a phone call, you won’t be in the answer.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Book a room for two adults and a baby at [your hotel] for two nights from [a date], on the hotel’s own website, and make sure a crib is reserved. Tell me whether it’s guaranteed and if there’s a charge. Stop before paying.” If it can only leave a note, parents’ agents can’t promise a crib either. Our free agent check can test this.
Questions
Can an agent reserve a crib?
If the booking engine offers it as an add-on or the hotel confirms requests, yes. If it's a free-text note, the agent can ask but can't guarantee it.
Do rollaways fit in every room?
No. Many rooms don't have space or are at maximum occupancy. State which room types allow a rollaway.
Should crib and rollaway fees be shown?
Yes. If there's a charge, show it before booking so agents can include it in the total.
What about pack 'n plays versus cribs?
Many hotels provide portable cribs. Say what you provide, and whether bedding is included.
