AI SEO and agent bookings for independent hotels in Glasgow
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Glasgow's 5% visitor levy starts in January 2027. What it means for AI agents quoting prices, and how to check an agent can book a Glasgow hotel direct.
Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest city and hosts big events: concerts at the Hydro, football at Hampden, Ibrox and Celtic Park, and conferences at the SEC. Guests ask AI assistants for rooms “walking distance to the Hydro” or “near Central Station for an early train”. These are date-specific bookings, and an agent can finish them on the hotel’s own site or an OTA.
Local rules an agent runs into
A visitor levy from January 2027. Glasgow City Council’s visitor levy scheme starts on 25 January 2027, at 5% of the accommodation charge. From then on, every Glasgow room price an agent quotes needs the levy included to be accurate.
Different rules from Edinburgh. Both cities charge 5%, but each council sets its own scheme details. An agent shouldn’t assume Edinburgh’s five-night cap applies in Glasgow.
Short-let licensing. As everywhere in Scotland, short-term lets in Glasgow need a council licence, so licensed apartments compete with hotels in the same searches.
Total price law. UK law has required mandatory charges to be in the headline price since April 2025.
What this means when an agent books in Glasgow
- Event nights sell out. When a big concert is on, an agent may check many hotels at once. A booking flow that is slow or shows an empty calendar is easy to skip.
- The 2027 change is a transition risk. Rates loaded before the levy, and cached prices on third-party sites, can disagree with the hotel’s own total, and an agent may see two prices for the same stay.
- Location in plain text. An agent can only match “near the SEC” or “near Queen Street” if the hotel states its distance to these places.
Getting recommended by AI
Glasgow prompts often mention concerts at the Hydro, the West End and the Merchant City. AI names hotels that state distances to the big venues and describe their neighbourhood. Event-driven pages are an easy way for independents to appear.
How to check
Ask an agent to book two nights at your hotel on your own website for a date after 25 January 2027, stopping before payment, and to report the total and whether it includes the visitor levy. Our free agent check runs this for you.

Questions
When does Glasgow's visitor levy start?
Glasgow City Council's visitor levy scheme starts on 25 January 2027. It was approved at 5% of the accommodation charge.
Is Glasgow's levy the same as Edinburgh's?
Both are 5% of the accommodation cost under the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Act 2024, but each council sets its own scheme details, such as caps and exemptions. Agents that assume Edinburgh's rules apply in Glasgow can quote the wrong total.
