What is an entity (in AI search)?

An entity is a distinct thing, like a specific hotel, that search engines and AI connect facts to. Consistent names and details help AI know who you are.
An entity is a distinct, identifiable thing, such as a person, place, company or a specific hotel, that search engines and AI models recognise and attach facts to. Google’s Knowledge Graph and the internal knowledge of AI models are, in effect, large maps of entities and their relationships.
Why it matters for hotels
When a guest asks AI about “The Mill House in Bath”, the AI has to work out which entity that is: the hotel, a restaurant with the same name, or a different Mill House elsewhere. It then uses the facts it has connected to that entity: address, star rating, parking, pets.
Mistakes happen when:
- The hotel’s name, address or phone number differ between its website, Google Business Profile and listings.
- The hotel changed its name and old listings remain.
- Several businesses share a similar name.
What helps
Consistent name, address and contact details everywhere; schema.org Hotel markup with links to official profiles; and up-to-date listings on the sites AI trusts.
Why it matters for AI visibility
Being a clear, consistent entity across your site, Google and listings is one of the foundations of AI visibility.
