Do creative hotel room names confuse AI agents?
Updated By Akkrev
'The Snug' and 'Garden Hideaway' charm guests, but agents need bed type, size and view beside the name to choose the right room.
Independent hotels love naming rooms. “The Snug”, “Hayloft Suite”, “Captain’s Cabin”, “Garden Hideaway”. It’s part of what makes them different from chains. For AI agents, a name without facts is a puzzle.
What an agent needs from a room
When a guest asks “book me a room with a king bed and a bath, with a view if possible”, an agent needs to know for each room:
- Bed type and size.
- Maximum occupancy.
- Room size.
- Bathroom: bath, shower, both, walk-in, en suite.
- View, floor and accessibility.
- Any quirks: stairs, sloping ceilings, separate bathroom.
Where names get in the way
Name only in the room list. The booking engine shows “Snug, £140” and “Hideaway, £185”. The agent has to open each room to find out what’s different, or guess.
Category names that mean different things. “Superior”, “Deluxe”, “Classic” vary from hotel to hotel. Agents can’t compare a “Superior Double” here with one down the road.
Different names on different channels. Your site says “Hayloft Suite”; Booking.com says “Deluxe King Room with Garden View”. Agents comparing prices may not realise they’re the same room. See rate parity.
Facts in photos. The bath is in the photo, not the text. See text-reading vs visual agents.
Names plus facts
A pattern that works for people and agents:
The Snug. Small double, 12 sq m, double bed, shower, courtyard view, sleeps 2.
Then a line of character. The name stays; the facts make it bookable.
The US version
US guests often care about two queens versus one king. See two queen beds or one king?.
Historic and country hotels
Properties where every room is different benefit most from clear facts. See historic hotels and inns and country house hotels.
Structured data
Room facts can also be expressed in structured data. Some systems may read it. Plain text in the booking engine matters most, because that’s where the agent chooses.
Consistency helps matching
Agents compare sources. If your room names, descriptions and photos tell the same story on your site, Google and OTAs, it’s easier for an agent to trust that it’s choosing the right room at the right price.
What this means for AI recommendations
Creative room names make it harder for AI to match you to a guest’s question. “Room with a sea view and a bath” is matched to hotels that say so in plain words, not to a room called “The Driftwood”.
How to check
Open your booking engine’s room list and read it as if you couldn’t see the photos. Could you tell which room has a bath and which a shower? Then ask an agent: “Book the room with a bath and a king bed at [your hotel] for [a date], on the hotel’s own website. Tell me why you chose it. Stop before paying.” Our free agent check can include this.
Questions
Should hotels drop creative room names?
No. Names are part of a hotel's character. What helps is plain facts next to each name: bed, size, view, bathroom and occupancy.
How do agents match rooms across channels?
By comparing descriptions. If a room is called one thing on your site and another on an OTA, agents may struggle to tell they're the same.
Do agents read room descriptions fully?
They may skim, and they read what's on the room list first. Key facts should be near the name, not at the end of a long paragraph.
Is room size important?
Guests often ask for 'a big room' or compare sizes. Square feet or square metres in text helps.
Do agents use room photos?
Visual agents may look at them. Text-reading agents rely on descriptions, so facts should be written down.
