Why isn't my hotel, restaurant or café showing up in ChatGPT?
Updated By Akkrev
Your venue never appears in ChatGPT, even for questions it should win. The eight most common reasons for hotels, restaurants and cafés, and how to check.
Key points
- First test with and without your name. If ChatGPT can't describe you by name, it can't find you. If it can, it just isn't picking you.
- The most common technical cause is a website that blocks OpenAI's search crawler, often by accident through a firewall or CDN.
- Next most common: thin or missing listings on Bing, Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor or booking sites that ChatGPT reads.
- Many venues are invisible simply because nothing online describes them for the question guests ask.
- Always test in a temporary or logged-out chat. Your own history changes what ChatGPT shows you.
ChatGPT doesn't know you
Ask it about your venue by name. If it guesses, gets you wrong or says it can't find you, start with crawling and listings.
ChatGPT knows you but doesn't pick you
It describes you correctly by name but names others for guest questions. Start with descriptions, reviews and mentions.
If your hotel, restaurant or café never shows up in ChatGPT, there are two possible problems. Either ChatGPT can’t find reliable information about you, or it finds you but other places are better described for the question. You can tell which by asking ChatGPT about your venue by name. Most venues that are missing have one of eight causes, and each one can be checked in a few minutes.
Step 1: run the two tests
Open a temporary chat or log out. Your own chat history and memory change what ChatGPT shows you, so a logged-in test can mislead you.
Test A, by name: “Tell me about [your venue], [town]. What is it like and how do I book?”
Test B, like a guest: a question you would expect to win, without your name. For example “best Sunday roast near Clapham Common” or “quiet boutique hotel in Harrogate with parking”.
| Test A | Test B | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong, vague or “I can’t find” | Not named | ChatGPT can’t find or trust your information. Check causes 1 to 4. |
| Correct and detailed | Not named | ChatGPT knows you but others fit the question better. Check causes 5 to 8. |
| Correct | Named sometimes | You are in the running. Track it over time and widen the questions. |
Causes when ChatGPT doesn’t know you
1. Your website blocks OpenAI’s crawler
OpenAI says a site must not block OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search answers. Some website builders, firewalls and CDNs block AI crawlers by default. Use our free AI crawler check or read is your website blocking AI crawlers.
2. Search engines barely know you
ChatGPT finds most local information by running a web search through third-party providers. Industry tests suggest Bing data plays a big part in local answers. If you have never claimed Bing Places, or your site is not indexed in Bing, ChatGPT has less to go on. Check Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.
3. Your listings are thin or missing
For hotels, a 2026 study of 998 US hotels found ChatGPT’s most cited sources were TripAdvisor (27%) and Booking.com (23%). For restaurants and cafés, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google and booking platforms carry similar weight. An unclaimed or half-empty listing on these sites leaves a gap AI can’t fill.
4. Your facts disagree
Different names, addresses, phone numbers or hours across your site and listings make AI less confident. An old closure notice or former name can even lead ChatGPT to say you have shut. See why does ChatGPT say my restaurant is closed.

5. You aren’t described for the question
AI matches the exact details a guest asks for. If nothing about you mentions “dog-friendly”, “private dining”, “gluten-free” or “parking”, you will not be named for those questions, even if they are true. Say them plainly on your website, Google profile and listings.
6. Your information is locked away
Menus as PDFs or photos, rooms only visible inside a booking engine and opening hours in an image are hard for AI to read. Put the key facts in plain text. See can AI read your menu.
7. Fewer reviews and mentions than competitors
In the hotel study above, ChatGPT named 84% of hotels with 2,500 or more Google reviews and 52% of those with under 50. Local guides, press and blogs that mention competitors also tip the balance. Read why AI recommends your competitors.
8. You are new or recently renamed
New venues need time to appear in search, listings and reviews. Renamed venues often fight their old name for months. See opening a new restaurant or café and changed your name.
What to do next
- Run tests A and B in a temporary chat and write down the results.
- Fix any technical block first. Nothing else works until ChatGPT can read you.
- Claim and complete Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and your main review or booking listings.
- Add the details guests ask about to your website in plain text.
- Repeat the same questions in two to four weeks. Answers vary day to day, so look at the pattern.
Akkrev runs your guest questions every week across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models, shows who gets named instead of you and which sources decide it. See plans.
Questions
Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my restaurant?
Usually because other restaurants are better documented for the question asked. Their listings, menus and reviews mention the dish, area or occasion. Check whether ChatGPT can describe you by name first, then compare what the sources it cites say about competitors.
Why isn't my hotel showing up in ChatGPT?
Hotels most often miss out because ChatGPT relies on TripAdvisor and Booking.com for hotel answers, and the hotel's own site is rarely cited. Incomplete OTA and review listings, a blocked crawler or rooms hidden inside a booking widget are the usual causes.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to find a new business?
Weeks to months. ChatGPT needs to find you through search and see you confirmed on listings and reviews. Getting listed and reviewed quickly is the fastest route.
Does ChatGPT use Google to find businesses?
ChatGPT uses third-party search providers and its own crawler rather than Google Search. Industry tests point to Bing data for local results. Keep Bing Places as complete as your Google profile.
