Alexa+ and Expedia: voice hotel booking and US independents
USUpdated By Akkrev
Amazon said in December 2025 that Alexa+ would find, compare and book hotels using Expedia's inventory in 2026. What voice booking may mean for independents.
Amazon’s upgraded assistant, Alexa+, is designed to do more than answer questions. In December 2025, Amazon announced travel and booking integrations, including one with Expedia. It said Alexa+ would be able to find, suggest, compare, book and manage hotel bookings using Expedia’s lodging inventory, with the integration arriving in 2026.
What voice booking changes
A guest talking to Alexa+ in their kitchen doesn’t see a website. They hear a few options and say yes to one. That changes the hotel’s position in three ways:
- Fewer options presented. A screen can show twenty hotels. A voice answer might name two or three.
- No brand experience. No photos, no website, no story, unless the guest asks to see them.
- The listing is everything. The hotel is described by its data on the platform: name, location, rating, price, amenities.
Through Expedia, not direct
The announcement describes booking through Expedia’s inventory. For an independent hotel listed on Expedia, that’s a new source of demand, with Expedia’s commission. For an independent that isn’t on Expedia, Alexa+ may not offer it at all through this route.
Amazon didn’t describe a way for Alexa+ to book directly with independent hotels. That’s consistent with other assistants: Microsoft’s Copilot, Meta’s Muse and Google’s test all started with big partners. See Google’s agentic hotel booking test and why AI agents book US hotels through Expedia.
Why your Expedia listing matters more
If voice assistants pick hotels using OTA data, the quality of that data matters:
- Accurate amenities. Pet-friendly, parking, pool, accessibility. A voice assistant may filter on them.
- Clear room names and descriptions. The assistant reads them out, or summarises them.
- Fees. US rules on junk fees require mandatory fees in the total price. An assistant that quotes a price aloud should quote the right one.
- Reviews and rating. Often the deciding factor when only two or three options are named.
The direct-booking angle
Voice booking through an OTA doesn’t stop a guest from booking direct next time. A guest who enjoys a stay may ask their assistant to “book that inn again”, and if the assistant can use the hotel’s own site, it may. That depends on whether the hotel’s site works for agents.
What this means for AI recommendations
Voice assistants name even fewer options than chat assistants, often just one or two. Being in that short answer depends on the same sources: your listings, reviews and clear facts on your own site. Voice makes AI visibility more competitive, not less.
How to check
Review your Expedia listing as if it would be read aloud: is the description clear, are amenities accurate, are fees right? Then ask a voice assistant you have access to about hotels in your area for a specific date, and note who it names. Our free agent check looks at your own website, which is the route you control.
Questions
What did Amazon announce?
In December 2025, Amazon said an Expedia integration was coming to Alexa+ in 2026, letting Alexa find, suggest, compare, book and manage hotel bookings using Expedia's lodging inventory.
Does this include independent hotels?
It includes independents listed on Expedia, booked through Expedia. Amazon didn't describe a way for Alexa+ to book directly with independent hotels.
Is it live?
Amazon said 2026 without a specific date. Check Amazon's current information for availability.
Will voice booking replace websites?
Unlikely. But it adds another route where the guest never sees the hotel's website, which makes the underlying listing data more important.
Should independents list on Expedia because of Alexa+?
That's a commercial decision about commission and control. Alexa+ is one more reason some hotels may choose to, but it shouldn't be the only one.
Can a guest ask Alexa+ for a specific hotel?
They can ask. Whether Alexa+ can book it depends on whether that hotel is in the inventory it uses.
