Booking engines UK independent hotels use, and AI agents
UKUpdated By Akkrev
Guestline, SynXis, SiteMinder, Mews, eviivo, Freetobook and more. What our pilot found for UK engines, and what to ask your provider.
Most UK independent hotels, B&Bs and inns take direct bookings through a booking engine from a technology provider. Which one depends on size, budget and history. Some engines come with a property management system; others are standalone.
Engines common in the UK independent market
Our Agent Booking Index covers engines UK independents use, including:
- Guestline, popular with independent hotels and small groups. See Guestline.
- SynXis, a central reservation system used by many larger independents. See SynXis.
- SiteMinder and Little Hotelier, widely used by small hotels and B&Bs. See SiteMinder and Little Hotelier.
- Mews, popular with design-led city hotels. See Mews.
- D-EDGE, used by some upscale independents. See D-EDGE.
- eviivo and Freetobook, common with B&Bs and guest houses. See eviivo and Freetobook.
- Profitroom and Bookassist, used by some hotels for direct booking marketing.
What the pilot found
In our pilot of 28 UK hotels on 20 October 2026:
- All seven Guestline hotels passed, with an average of 10.7 out of 12.
- All five SynXis hotels passed, averaging 10.2.
- Both SiteMinder hotels passed.
- One of three Mews hotels passed. The other two needed an interactive date picker.
- Both D-EDGE hotels were partial. The engine showed prices but ignored dates passed in the web address.
- Several hotels had no online engine, and failed.
The sample is small and the agent was a scripted browser, so treat this as directional. Full detail is on the index.
Why the hotel’s own set-up matters
Hotels on the same engine scored differently. The difference came from how each hotel’s website linked to its engine, whether the link was visible to the agent, and how fast the homepage loaded. See why your booking engine choice matters less than you think.
UK-specific things agents need
Prices including VAT and mandatory charges, in line with UK price transparency rules. See VAT-inclusive prices and drip pricing.
Visitor levies where they apply, such as in Edinburgh. See UK tourist taxes.
Currency. Two pilot hotels showed US dollars by default. See currency on hotel sites.
Questions to ask your provider
- Can guests and agents land on the engine with dates already set?
- Are prices and room names shown as text?
- What bot protection runs on booking and payment pages?
- Do you have plans for AI agent connections such as an MCP server?
What this means for AI recommendations
Your booking engine affects more than bookings. If AI assistants can’t read room types and prices from it, they describe your hotel from OTA data instead. The engine is part of what AI learns about you.
How to check
Ask an agent: “Go to [your website], find the booking page and tell me the price of a double room for two adults on [a date next month].” Note where it slows down. Our free agent check gives you the breakdown.
Questions
Which UK booking engine did best in the pilot?
In our small pilot, hotels on Guestline and SynXis all passed, as did both SiteMinder hotels. Results are directional and hotels on the same engine still scored differently.
Which struggled?
Engines that needed an interactive date picker, or ignored dates in the web address, produced more partial results. Hotels with no online engine failed.
Is my engine on the index?
The Agent Booking Index has pages for 20 engines, with pilot results where at least two hotels used them. Others are marked not yet tested.
Should I switch engines?
Not on the strength of a small pilot. Check how your current engine and website perform first.
